BTC Dominance at 60%. Here's Why It's the Most Misread Chart in Crypto.
BTC dominance at 60.3% is widely read as bad news for alts. On the surface that makes sense: if Bitcoin holds more of total market cap, less flows elsewhere.
But dominance at 60% in a declining total market is a completely different story than dominance at 60% in a growing one. Right now, broader market pressure means high dominance often reflects capital retreating to perceived safety, not a permanent structural shift away from alts.
What historical cycles actually show: dominance tends to peak, then rotate hard. In early 2021, BTC dominance was near 70%. By May it had dropped to 40%. That rotation didn't happen in a straight line, but when it moved, it moved fast and made generational alt returns in weeks.
The more interesting question is what narrative breaks dominance lower when it finally turns. In 2021 it was DeFi and NFTs. In 2024, Layer 2s. In 2026 it's shaping up to be AI protocols and RWA. Different stories, same mechanic: capital chases whatever feels like the next thing.
What do you think is the catalyst that breaks BTC dominance lower this cycle?
