DeFi Had 121 Hacks in 2026. When Does This Become an Existential Problem? 121 exploits. $942 million lost. And we're only seven months into the year. Q2 was the worst quarter on record for DeFi security incidents: 85 attacks, roughly $775 million drained. That's not a rough patch, it's a pattern. At these loss rates, the most important questions in DeFi aren't about yields or tokenomics, they're about whether the security infrastructure is keeping pace with the capital flowing in. The frustrating thing is that most of these exploits aren't novel. Reentrancy attacks, oracle manipulation, access control failures: these are well-documented vectors with known mitigations. The gap isn't knowledge, it's execution. Teams ship fast, audits lag, and the incentive to move quickly still outweighs the incentive to move safely for too many protocols. For users, the calculus is shifting. High TVL used to be shorthand for safe. Now you have to dig deeper: audit quality, team track record, insurance coverage, and whether a protocol has survived real attack conditions. Not the most exciting research, but probably the most important one right now. At what point does this security track record start routing serious long-term capital away from DeFi permanently?
